A Description of our Homeland

“A Description of our Homeland” by Krišjānis Barons is a reprint of the 1859 book that first documented Latvian geography and its people. With a new design, added notes from researchers, and essays by contemporaries, it expands on the history of the territory and serves as a portrait of our country at that time. Commissioned by Imants Ziedonis Foundation “Viegli”.

For the 150th anniversary of Krišjānis Barons, the museum bearing his name reprinted the first documentation of Latvian geography, geology, and social processes. Originally published in 1869, this edition marked its first modern reprint.

The design is built on the idea of modesty transforming into richness when the book is opened. It serves as an allegory for the Latvian nation—humble in its roots, yet abundant in substance and culture.

The special textile techniques featured in the book’s visual design were created by artist Ieva Krūmiņa. These tactile elements add a new dimension to the reading experience and serve as both a delightful and meaningful detail for the reader.

The ‘Austra’ typeface, developed by Eva Abdulina, is a perfect fit for the book’s concept of merging context with design, rather than mimicking Western aesthetics without substance.

Since its release, the book has been awarded Silver in the Editorial Design category at the Art Directors Club of Europe and the Members Club Gold Award in its Latvian chapter.

It has become an essential gift during official visits and a cherished collector’s item for home libraries. In a time when national origin and identity have once again gained stark importance, this book stands as a true document of the Latvian nation.
